You can't make this shit up

False Alarm

Ok, I must have been drunk or stoned or both, because Numb3rs is NOT a great show, and the football games we watched were pretty much blow outs, not very interesting at all. So I admit to being an idiot mezmerized by his own stupidity.

I did see Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and loved it. I don't care if the movie isn't deserving, I loved it, the directing, the acting, the special effects were perfect considering this is not an effects movie in any way. I don't want to give away anything to those who haven't seen it, but I didn't enjoy the film for its love story, I saw through that to the deeper themes of traumatic memories. It's a tradegy, so I imagine many people won't like it, or will like it but not give it too much thought. I doubt the Oscars will give it too much focus. My negative mind clung to the film for a week.

Numb3rs

On a side note from the football game, I have a new respect for CBS. Their football coverage was much less "party" oriented than Fox, less annoying and their shots were more intelligent as well.

After the game they premiered a new show, Numb3rs, about 2 brothers, 1 a FBI agent and the other a math magician. They has a respected if not loving relationship, until the mathmatician helps the FBI agent find a serial killer. The ending had a great moment where the FBI agent talks his way into the suspected killer's house, pretending to be looking for DVD pirates. He notices all the signs that this is the killer, and they stare into each eyes for a moment, til they both break their cover and try to kill each other.

The show could be a gimick, but the preview for the next show seems to be just as interesting.

Best Pro Footbal Game Ever.

You know you're not young anymore when your hero as a small child is now an old man. Joe Namath?

I'm gonna argue that the Pittsberg New England game is the best in the history of the NFL. It has become a downer in the end, the Patriots clinched their victory with about 4 minutes to go. Yet I loved the emotion of this game, the Steelers went to the locker room during half-time well behind the Pats, and the coach said "lets not curl up in our shells and call this a game." So they came back from the break and broke out, and for at least 3 times they had a fighting chance to win. The crowd was smart and dedicated. But best of all I liked that they played like the Steelers of old, not fast and fancy but powerful and steady.

And the Patriots played brilliant gentlemen's football. I never once saw them through a dirty tackle or talk shit to the other team. Steady and resolved, they cleared their heads after every setback. I saw a genius improvised play that Brady called right at the snap, disoriented the Steelers and gave the Pats one of their early touchdowns.

Note to self: buy a copy of this game from the NFL.

Cedar Fever and Online Dating

I returned to Austin just in time for a game of football with the guys, and got a nice cracked rib for all my wanton fun. To add illness to injury, I've come down with Cedar Fever, along with half of Austin, which is basically a cold caused by allergies gone insane. You know that itchy throat feeling you get from a bad cold, where you want to cough and hack all the time? Mix that with chest pain everytime you even think of air and you have a steady feeling of slowly choking to death. Sadly, the pollen in Austin is so horrendous I am wondering how long I can really last in this town? Let's hope for the best.

Hopefully that first subject scared away most of you, because I have a confession to make. I had my first online dating experience this past week. That's not the big news, this is: astonishingly, miraculously, inexplicably, even magically, I believe I hit jackpot on my very first try. This girl, L, is smart, beautiful, and totally-down to earth. She's got eyes that make me go weak like a 16 year old. The conversation doesn't flow as easily as I'd want it to, but that seems to be due to sincere nervousness more than incompatiblity. I hardly know her but here's to what I do know! Let's hope for the best.

Back from vacation

Just had a wonderful vacation in Florida with my sister and grandparents. Our mother died a few years ago, so this small group of 4 people is pretty much all that is left of that side of the family (the rest is in Poland). Very healing trip, we all had a wonderful time. Here are some pictures from the trip.

Kerry dreams of winning in 08, gets hauled away in padded truck

If you don't know me or this blog very well, let me preface this piece by saying that I am farther left than John Kerry is. However, I am never a supporter of something stupid. I never once was surprised when Bush beat Kerry in Nov, and the reasons I've heard for the defeat have been pretty ridiculous.

So here comes this Newsweek interview with Kerry, post-election. I think now more than ever that the Dems wanted to replace a bad choice with a worse one. I'm sorry, but ABB (Anything But Bush) is not a smart way to election our nation's leaders. I don't hate Bush so passionately that I want him replaced with an idiot.

Got a Devil's Haircut in My Mind

This will be the 2nd time I've quoted poetry in 1 week! Beck's Devil's Haircut, the funniest verse:

Love machines on the sympathy crutches
Discount orgies on the dropout buses
Hitching a ride with the bleeding noses
Coming to town with the brief case blues

I had an amazing New Year's Eve. I completely understood the purpose of the ritual. To have a drink, get silly, and remember that every year you get a second chance. So I had TWO beautiful women ask me for my phone number. The second one was sneaky, too, she entered it into her phone to make it easier to see for the first girl, but she kept it in her phone, and told me she'd call me later. Probably I won't hear from either one, but it was still a pretty magical moment.
